When Faith and Passion Met
Music Appreciation Lecture - St. Matthews Baptist Church
Last night, I had the incredible opportunity to merge my faith and passion in a meaningful way. It was a night filled with music, storytelling, and connection as I performed in the fellowship hall at my church. While some members enjoyed a meal before our Spring Revival event, I had the privilege of presenting a lecture on Music Appreciation—a topic that lies close to my heart.
The Bible is rich with references to music, celebrating its role in worship, joy, and even solace during sorrowful times. Music in the Bible is more than artistic expression; it is a divine bridge, connecting us to God and uplifting the community. However, I also highlighted an important challenge musicians face in worship settings: the delicate balance of steering clear of ego. When personal recognition takes precedence, it can detract from the authenticity and spiritual focus of the worship experience.
As I shared my thoughts with the congregation, I also opened up about my personal journey—the obstacles I’ve faced and how God has guided me through them. With my guitar in hand, I ventured beyond traditional church music, playing R&B tunes that resonate with my soul. I recounted how music has been my passion since childhood and urged everyone listening that it’s never too late to chase their dreams. Music has been a profound source of healing and inspiration in my life, and I encouraged them to explore its potential in their own lives.
The highlight of the evening was when I picked up my guitar and sang “Hard Times” by Ray Charles—one of my favorites. The congregation was surprised since many of them had never heard me sing or seen my YouTube channels. For a brief moment, I stepped into the shoes of a performer, a teacher, and a storyteller, all rolled into one. My hope was to provide insight into the life of a gigging musician, and perhaps even inspire someone to book me for their own celebrations.
To my delight, the books I brought along sold out quickly. Some members even paid in advance for copies, eager to support my journey. It was a whirlwind of a night—I played, spoke, taught, sang, entertained, and sold books—all in the span of an hour. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay for the revival service. Duty called, and I had to relieve my son, who was holding down the fort at my home watching his mom while I was away.
In that one evening, I truly experienced the joy of intertwining my faith with my passion. It was a reminder of the power of music to bring people together, inspire, and uplift. My hope is that the seeds I planted in the hearts of those who were there will continue to grow and bear fruit, just as music has done in my own life.
